Karat measures how much of a piece is actually gold. Everything else in an alloy is other metal, and since you pay by gold content, the karat is the single most important thing on a price tag after the weight.

The Karat Scale
The scale runs in twenty-fourths. 24 parts out of 24 is pure gold, so 24K is essentially 100 percent gold. Each step down replaces gold with alloy metals such as copper, silver and zinc.
- 24K — 99.9 percent gold. Deep yellow, very soft, used for bars, coins and some traditional pieces.
- 22K — 91.6 percent gold. Rich colour, still soft. Common in Indian and South Asian designs.
- 21K — 87.5 percent gold. The dominant karat in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf. Strong colour with usable durability.
- 18K — 75 percent gold. Noticeably harder, paler, and the standard for stone-set and European designs.
- 14K and below — less common in Saudi jewellery, more usual in imported fashion pieces.
Reading a Hallmark
Saudi jewellery is stamped with a three-digit number that expresses purity in parts per thousand rather than in karats. Learning these four numbers is enough to read almost anything in the market.

- 750 — 18K
- 585 — 14K
The stamp is usually on a clasp, the inside of a ring band, or a small tag on a chain. It is often tiny, so ask the shop to show it to you under a loupe. A piece with no hallmark at all is not necessarily fake, but it is a piece you should not buy without testing.
Why 21K Dominates in Saudi Arabia
21K is the practical centre of the Saudi market, and the reason is a balance rather than any single virtue. At 87.5 percent purity it retains the warm yellow tone buyers in the region expect, which 18K does not quite deliver. At the same time the 12.5 percent alloy content makes it meaningfully harder than 22K or 24K, so it survives daily wear without deforming.
The market effect compounds. Because most pieces sold are 21K, most pieces resold are 21K, so the second-hand market for it is the deepest and the buy-back discount is the tightest. Choosing the dominant karat is itself a small financial advantage.
How Karat Affects Price
Price per gram tracks gold content almost exactly. If 24K is 526 riyals per gram, then 21K is roughly 526 multiplied by 0.875, about 460 riyals, and 18K is roughly 526 multiplied by 0.75, about 395 riyals.
This is why comparing two pieces without checking karat is meaningless. A 20 gram 18K bracelet contains 15 grams of gold. A 20 gram 21K bracelet contains 17.5 grams. The second costs more because it is more gold, not because the shop marked it up.
Choosing a Karat
For investment, 24K in certified bar form. Purity is what you are buying, and bullion is zero-rated for VAT.
For everyday jewellery, 21K. Best combination of colour, durability and resale depth in the Saudi market.
For rings worn constantly or pieces with stones, 18K. The extra hardness protects settings and resists scratching far better.
For traditional heavy pieces, 22K, which is common in imported South Asian designs and carries a distinctly rich colour.
Testing and Verification
Reputable shops will test a piece on request. Electronic conductivity testers give a quick non-destructive reading. Specific gravity testing compares weight in air and in water and is reliable for solid pieces. Acid testing is accurate but leaves a small mark, so it is normally reserved for pieces being sold rather than examined.
