Gold Rate in KSA Today
How the Gold Rate in Saudi Arabia Is Set
The gold rate you see in a Riyadh or Jeddah shop is not a local number. It is the international spot price of gold, converted into Saudi Riyal and broken down by karat. The chain is short and completely mechanical: the world market quotes gold in US dollars per troy ounce, that figure is divided by 31.1035 to get a price per gram of pure gold, then multiplied by 3.7500, the fixed riyal-to-dollar peg that has not moved since 1986. Finally each karat is calculated using its purity ratio.
Because the peg is fixed, every move in the global market passes straight through to the riyal price with no currency risk in between. That is a genuine advantage for buyers in the Kingdom compared with markets where a floating local currency adds a second layer of uncertainty on top of the metal price.
Why 21K Dominates the Saudi Market
If you walk into a gold shop anywhere in Saudi Arabia, the display case will be dominated by 21 karat. This surprises visitors from India or Pakistan, where 22K leads, and from Europe or America, where 18K and 14K are standard.
The reason is a practical compromise. At 87.5 percent purity, 21K keeps the deep yellow colour that Gulf buyers expect, but the added alloy makes it noticeably harder than 22K. Bangles and chains worn every day resist scratching and bending far better. It also costs less per gram than 22K or 24K, which matters when a wedding set runs to eighty grams or more. That combination of colour, durability and price is why 21K became the default here.
24K sits at the other end of the scale. Nearly pure at 99.9 percent, it is too soft for jewellery that gets daily wear, so its natural home is bars and coins bought to store value. 18K, harder still, is used for pieces set with diamonds and coloured stones because it grips the settings securely.
What You Actually Pay in a Shop
The rate on this page is the raw metal value. Two things get added before the number on your invoice:
- The making charge. This is the jeweller’s fee for turning metal into a finished piece. It typically runs from around 8 percent on simple machine-made chains to 25 percent or more on detailed handwork and bridal sets. This is the only part of the price that is genuinely negotiable, because the metal rate is identical everywhere in the Kingdom.
- VAT at 15 percent. Saudi Arabia applies the highest VAT rate in the GCC to gold jewellery. Investment gold of 99 percent purity or higher in tradeable form, such as certified bars, is zero-rated instead. That difference is significant on larger purchases and explains why serious savers often choose bars over jewellery.
A Simple Way to Check Any Quote
Before you visit a shop, note today’s rate for the karat you want. In the shop, ask for the total price of the piece and its exact weight. Multiply the weight by the rate to get the metal value, then subtract that from the total. What remains is the making charge plus VAT. Once you can see that number, you can compare two shops honestly rather than guessing, and you know exactly where there is room to negotiate.
Zakat on Gold
Gold held above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year is subject to zakat at 2.5 percent. The nisab is fixed by weight at 85 grams of pure gold, but its value in riyals changes every day with the gold price. Our Zakat calculator shows today’s threshold in riyals and works out the amount due, and the full guide covers the conditions and the scholarly positions in detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold rate in KSA today?
The live rate for every karat appears in the price table at the top of this page in Saudi Riyal. It updates automatically several times a day in line with the international market. 21K is the most widely traded karat in the Kingdom.
Is the gold rate different in Riyadh and Jeddah?
No. The metal rate is identical across every Saudi city because it derives from the same world spot price and the same fixed peg. What varies between shops is the making charge and the range of designs, not the gold itself.
Is there tax on buying gold in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, 15 percent VAT applies to gold jewellery. Investment gold at 99 percent purity or above in tradeable form is zero-rated, which is why certified bars are treated differently from necklaces and bangles.
Which karat should I buy in Saudi Arabia?
For everyday jewellery, 21K offers the best balance of colour, durability and price, which is why it leads the market. For pure investment, 24K bars carry the lowest premium and the VAT exemption. For diamond settings, 18K is the practical choice.
How often does the rate change?
The international market moves continuously during trading hours. We refresh the displayed prices automatically several times a day, and every page carries a timestamp in Saudi time so you know how current the figure is.
